The Challenge

A major designer and manufacturer of military helicopters needed a torque measurement solution for the engine shaft of a helicopter engine. One of the key issues that needed to be addressed was the need to accurately measure torque while operating in extremely harsh environments. Other torque sensing options, such as the strain gauge, would fail with normal use under these conditions.

The Solution

MDI’s solution was to develop a custom design to incorporate torque sensing on the existing shaft. A custom magnetized sensing collar was developed and pressed onto the shaft. The durability, repeatability, and accuracy of the design made the MDI solution ideal for the application.

The Results

With its use on the engine shaft operation, the MDI sensor maintained under ±1% accuracy.
